Appliances and Water Heaters Practice Questions
The circuit that feeds one appliance is sized in Article 422 from what is stamped on the appliance, and the service that supplies a building full of them is sized in Article 120 from something else. These questions work the branch circuit and overcurrent rules in 422.10 and 422.11, the storage water heater sentence at 422.13, the disconnect rules in Part III, and the two Article 120 sentences that keep the load calculation from double counting the same heater.
Pick an answer and the explanation opens with the section it comes from. These are original questions written for this site, not questions from the exam. Have your own code book open: the Texas exam is open book, and looking the section up is the skill being tested.

1. How does Article 100 define an appliance?

D. Utilization equipment, generally other than industrial, built in a standardized size or type and installed or connected as a unit to perform one or more functions
The definition turns on three ideas: utilization equipment, generally not industrial, built in a standard size or type, and installed as a unit to do one or more jobs. Being permanently connected is not part of it, which is why a cord and plug connected toaster is still an appliance. The 50 volt figure belongs to the listing requirement rather than to the definition.

2. Which appliances does Article 422 require to be listed?

B. All appliances supplied at 50 volts or higher
The listing sentence is one line long and it draws its line at supply voltage: 50 volts or higher and the appliance is listed. The method of connection, the occupancy and the wattage do not enter into it. That single threshold is the whole of the rule, which makes it an easy one-line item to write.

3. Which of these appears on the list of appliances Article 422 requires to have Class A ground-fault protection for personnel?

The list runs automotive vacuum machines, drinking water coolers and bottle fill stations, cord and plug connected high pressure spray washing machines, tire inflation machines, vending machines, sump pumps and dishwashers. It is a named list rather than a category, so reasoning from what sounds wet or dangerous will not get you there. Dryers and ovens are covered by the ordinary receptacle and outlet rules instead.

4. The appliance ground-fault list applies to equipment within which limits?

A. 150 volts or less to ground and 60 amperes or less
The section carries its own voltage and current window, 150 volts or less to ground and 60 amperes or less, single phase or three phase. That window is wider than the 125 volt, 15 and 20 ampere shape people carry over from the receptacle rules, which is what makes the second choice look right. Equipment on the list that sits outside the window is not reached by this sentence.

5. Where may the ground-fault device required for those appliances be located?

B. In the branch circuit overcurrent device, at a device or outlet in the supply circuit, in the attachment plug, in the supply cord within 12 inches of the plug, or factory installed in the appliance
The section gives five permitted locations and puts one condition over all of them: the device is readily accessible and listed. The 12 inch figure applies only to the cord mounted version, and it is the detail an item will change to make a wrong answer. Restricting the device to the panelboard or to the appliance drops four of the five options the code allows.

6. An individual branch circuit supplies a fixed appliance that carries a marked rating. What sets the minimum ampacity of the branch circuit conductors?

D. The marked rating of the appliance
The branch circuit section starts from the marking on the appliance, or from the marked rating of an appliance carrying combined loads. It is not a table, not a horsepower and not the figure that ends up in the service calculation later. Where the appliance is motor operated and carries no marked rating, the same section hands the problem to the motor article instead.

7. A fixed storage water heater with a tank capacity under the figure the article names is supplied by its own branch circuit. What does that make the branch circuit rating?

A. Not less than 125 percent of the marked rating, because the article treats the heater as a continuous load
The storage water heater section does one thing: it declares a heater at or under the stated capacity to be a continuous load. The branch circuit section then applies the 125 percent that goes with a continuous load, and drops to 100 percent only where the branch circuit device and its assembly are listed for continuous operation at 100 percent of rating. Two sections in sequence, and the item is testing whether you follow the pointer from the first to the second.

8. Which storage water heaters does the continuous load sentence in Article 422 reach?

C. Heaters with a capacity of 120 gallons or less
The capacity threshold is 120 gallons, printed alongside its metric equivalent of 450 liters. A tank above that figure falls outside the sentence and goes back to the general appliance rules, and an item can set a stem on either side of the line deliberately. Storage type is doing work in that sentence too, since a tankless heater is not what the section is written about.

9. A 4500 watt, 240 volt fixed storage water heater with a 100 gallon tank is supplied by its own branch circuit. What is the smallest standard overcurrent device that satisfies the 125 percent requirement?

The heater draws 4500 divided by 240, or 18.75 amperes, and 125 percent of that is 23.4 amperes. The standard ratings run 20 then 25, so 25 amperes is the smallest one that covers the requirement. Marking the 23.4 skips the step of landing on a real device, and marking the 20 stops at the current before the multiplier is applied.

10. A single non-motor-operated appliance draws 10 amperes and carries no marked overcurrent device rating. What is the ceiling on the branch circuit device?

A. 20 amperes
The overcurrent section splits single non-motor-operated appliances at 13.3 amperes. At or below that figure with no marking, the device does not exceed 20 amperes; above it, the ceiling becomes 150 percent of the rated current. A 10 ampere appliance sits on the low side of the split, so the flat 20 ampere ceiling applies rather than any percentage of the load.

11. A single non-motor-operated appliance is rated 24 amperes and carries no marked overcurrent device rating. What is the largest branch circuit device permitted?

B. 40 amperes
Above 13.3 amperes the ceiling is 150 percent of the appliance rating, which is 36 amperes here. Thirty six is not a standard rating, and the same subdivision permits the next higher standard rating in that case, so 40 amperes is the answer. Rounding down to 35 is the instinct people carry over from conductor protection, and it is the wrong direction for this sentence.

12. An appliance arrives marked with a maximum overcurrent device rating. What weight does that marking carry?

C. The device installed does not exceed it
Where the appliance carries a marked overcurrent device rating, the branch circuit device does not exceed that marking. The manufacturer has already run a calculation you are not being asked to repeat. An item that quotes a marking is usually checking whether you will defer to it or reach for arithmetic instead.

13. An electric heating appliance uses resistance type heating elements rated more than 48 amperes. What does Article 422 require?

A. The elements are subdivided, each subdivided load not over 48 amperes and protected at not more than 60 amperes
Two numbers travel together in that sentence: each subdivided load stays at or under 48 amperes and each one is protected at not more than 60 amperes. The supplementary devices are factory installed on or in the heater or supplied as a separate assembly by the heater manufacturer, they are accessible, and they are suitable for branch circuit protection. The main conductors feeding them count as branch circuit conductors.

14. Central heating equipment other than fixed electric space heating equipment is supplied how?

The section asks for an individual branch circuit and then carries two exceptions that let named things share it. It is a short rule that reads like a general permission until you notice the word individual. The exceptions are the tested part, so read them before answering anything about what else is on the circuit.

15. Which of these may share the branch circuit that supplies central heating equipment?

One exception covers auxiliary equipment directly associated with the heating equipment, such as pumps, valves, humidifiers and air cleaners. The other names permanently connected air conditioning equipment together with the receptacle and the lighting outlet the code requires at that equipment. The dwelling unit receptacle circuits are required to serve their own outlets and nothing else, so all three of those choices are out.

16. What does the general disconnecting means rule for appliances require?

The opening sentence of Part III asks for a means that disconnects each appliance from all its ungrounded conductors at once. The grounded conductor is not part of that requirement. Locking and within sight are conditions that show up in the sections underneath it, attached to particular situations rather than to every appliance.

17. An appliance is supplied by two branch circuits. What does Article 422 ask of the disconnecting means?

The general section handles the multiple supply case by asking that the disconnects be grouped and identified as the set belonging to that appliance. Nothing requires them to be interlocked or combined into one handle. The point is that whoever comes to work on the equipment finds every one of them in the same place with a label saying so.

18. A permanently connected appliance is rated well under an eighth of a horsepower. When may the branch circuit overcurrent device serve as its disconnecting means?

The condition is either within sight from the appliance or capable of being locked open, and the provision for locking stays on the device whether or not a lock is fitted to it that day. The 2026 wording reaches appliances of any volt-ampere rating as well as those not over an eighth of a horsepower, which is why the 300 volt-ampere figure from older books is offered here. Being in the same building is not a code test for anything.

19. A permanently connected motor operated appliance has a motor rated above an eighth of a horsepower. Where does the disconnecting means go?

That subdivision sends you to the motor disconnect rules and then adds the same within sight or lockable condition for the permanently connected case. An exception lets the other disconnecting means sit out of sight where the appliance has a qualifying unit switch. Distance in feet and same room are not the tests the code uses here.

20. For a cord and plug connected appliance, what may serve as the disconnecting means?

Accessible carries the weight in that sentence. Where the connector or the plug and receptacle are not accessible, the appliance falls back to the permanently connected disconnect rule instead. An attachment fitting used this way is a factory installed part of the appliance and suitable for disconnecting it.

21. A cord and plug connected household range has its connection at the rear base. What makes that connection acceptable as the disconnecting means?

The section writes that case out by name: an attachment plug and receptacle at the rear base of a range, accessible from the front by pulling a drawer out, is permitted. Pulling a drawer is not removing part of the building, so the connection still counts as accessible. Distance and circuit arrangement have nothing to do with it.

22. How does the rating of a receptacle or separable connector serving as an appliance disconnect compare to the appliance?

The rating sentence sets a floor rather than a multiplier: not less than the rating of any appliance connected to the device. An exception lets demand factors authorized elsewhere in the code be applied to that rating. Reaching for 125 percent here imports a branch circuit sizing rule into a device rating rule, which is a different job.

23. A unit switch with a marked off position is used as the disconnecting means in a one family dwelling. What counts as the other disconnecting means?

B. The service disconnecting means
A unit switch only qualifies where other means for disconnection exist, and the section answers what those are occupancy by occupancy. In a one family dwelling the service disconnecting means is permitted to be it. Multifamily, two family and other occupancies each get their own answer, which is where most items on this section are built.

24. A switch or circuit breaker is used as the disconnecting means for an appliance. What does Article 422 require of it?

A. It is of the indicating type
One short section asks that a switch or circuit breaker used as the disconnecting means be of the indicating type, so a person can see whether it is open. It is a one-line knowledge item candidates drop because it looks too small to be tested. Horsepower rating and locking belong to other sections and to other conditions.

25. A fixed storage water heater goes into a dwelling service calculation. At what value does it enter?

The 125 percent belongs to the branch circuit, and the load calculation article says in its own words that a calculation is not required to carry continuous loads at 125 percent. The heater enters the calculation at its nameplate, where it counts as one of the appliances fastened in place that the 75 percent demand factor can reach once there are four or more of them. Carrying the branch circuit multiplier into the service produces a service one size too large, and there is always an option matching that answer.
