The exam does not use the code book’s words
Open book means the answer is in front of you. It does not mean you can find it. This maps how questions are worded onto where the rule actually lives.

The real problem with an open-book exam
Everyone assumes open book is easier. It is not, and the pass rate says so. Across every Texas electrical exam in fiscal 2025, roughly three in four attempts failed.
The reason is that you are not being tested on whether you know the rule. You are being tested on whether you can find it in about ninety seconds, repeatedly, for four hours.
And the exam does not phrase questions the way the code phrases rules. It uses trade language. The code uses defined terms. The gap between those two vocabularies is where the clock runs out.
How to use what follows
This is a translation table, not a study guide. It takes the words a question is likely to use and tells you which article to turn to.
Build your tabs from it. Not from the table of contents, which is organized the way the code thinks, but from this, which is organized the way questions are asked.
Nothing here reproduces code content. It points. You still read the rule in your own book, which is the only place it should be read.
If the question says it is about wire size
- Ampacity, ampacity tables, what a conductor can carry: Article 310.
- Temperature correction, ambient, rooftop, more than three conductors, derating, adjustment: 310.15.
- Termination temperature, what the lugs are rated for, the 60 or 75 degree column question: 110.14.
- Dwelling service and feeder conductors, the reduced-size allowance: 310.12.
- Minimum size after everything else, the small conductor cap: 240.4(D).
- Equipment grounding conductor size: Article 250.
- Grounding electrode conductor size: 250.66, and read the three ceilings under it.
Derating and termination are two different limits and a question can turn on either. When both apply you take the more restrictive result, and questions are built to make you stop after the first one.
If the question says it is about a raceway or a box
- Conduit fill percentage, how full can it be: Chapter 9, Table 1.
- Conductor cross-sectional area: Chapter 9, Table 5.
- Raceway area by trade size: Chapter 9, Table 4, organized by article number.
- Ready-made answers for identical conductors: Annex C.
- Box fill, cubic inches, how many conductors in a box: 314.16.
- Box support, fan boxes, weight limits: 314.27.
- Wire-bending space, gutter space, deflection of conductors: 312.9 and Article 314. It was 312.6 before the 2026 edition. Article 312 renumbered as a whole this cycle, so 312.6 is not vacant, it carries a different rule. An old tab lands you in real text answering a question you did not ask, which is the expensive kind of miss.
- Number of bends between pull points: the article for that raceway type in Chapter 3.
Chapter 9 is at the back and it is easy to lose. Tab all three tables plus Annex C. That is four tabs that pay for themselves in the first hour.
If the question says it is about a motor
- Which current to use, table versus nameplate: 430.6. Read this before anything else in Article 430.
- Branch-circuit conductors for one motor: 430.22.
- Conductors for several motors, or a motor plus other load: 430.24.
- Overload protection, service factor, temperature rise: 430.32.
- Short-circuit and ground-fault protection, fuse and breaker percentages: 430.52.
- Feeder protection for a group: 430.62.
- Control circuit conductors: 430.72.
- Disconnecting means, in sight from: 430.102.
Figure 430.1 at the front of the article is a map of which part answers which question. It is the fastest navigation aid in the whole code and most candidates never look at it.
If the question says it is about grounding
- What grounding is supposed to accomplish, and the sentence about the earth: 250.4.
- Which systems the code grounds, and the conditions: 250.20.
- Ungrounded systems and their marking: 250.21.
- The service bond, the main bonding jumper, neutral to ground: 250.24.
- What counts as a grounding electrode: 250.52.
- Grounding electrode conductor install rules: 250.64.
- Grounding electrode conductor size: 250.66.
- Bonding at services, bushings, locknuts: 250.92.
- Equipment grounding conductor size: Table 250.122.
Article 250 is long and reads badly front to back. Tab by these subheadings rather than by part, because questions arrive by topic and not by the article’s own structure.
If the question says it is about loads or services
- Dwelling load calculations: Article 120. This was Article 220 before the 2026 edition, and old tabs point at the wrong chapter.
- General lighting, volt-amperes per square foot: 120.13 for branch circuits, 120.41 for feeders and services. Two different figures.
- Heating versus cooling, noncoincident loads: 120.60.
- The optional dwelling method: 120.82. 120.80 is only the scope sentence for Part IV.
- Service entrance, overhead and underground, clearances: Article 230.
- Number of service disconnects: 230.71. Grouping them: 230.72. Two sections, and questions about grouping send you to the second one.
- Panelboard rules, overcurrent protection of a panel: Article 408.
If your book still has a tab that says 220, move it. That is the single most common wasted minute on the 2026 exam.
If the question says it is about protection or devices
- GFCI locations: 210.8. Texas keeps the exception for listed HVAC equipment at 210.8(F) without expiration.
- AFCI locations: 210.12.
- Standard device ratings, what sizes exist: 240.6(A).
- Next higher standard size and its three conditions: 240.4(B).
- Over 800 amperes, where the rule reverses: 240.4(C).
- Receptacle spacing, the six and twelve foot rule: 210.52.
- Required branch circuits in a dwelling: 210.11.
GFCI is the most-changed section across recent editions. If your study material is more than one cycle old, treat 210.8 as unknown and read it fresh.
A tab strategy that survives the clock
Texas permits tabs, but only tabs manufactured by the publisher. Homemade tabs are not allowed, so plan around a purchased set rather than index flags.
- Tab the four Chapter 9 items first. They are the furthest from where the book naturally falls open.
- Tab Article 120, and physically remove or relabel any tab that says 220.
- Tab 310.15, 110.14, 240.4 and 240.6 individually rather than tabbing the whole article. Those four sections carry most of the sizing questions.
- Tab Figure 430.1 rather than the start of Article 430.
- Tab 250.24, 250.66 and Table 250.122 individually. Tabbing the front of Article 250 does not help.
Fewer, better-placed tabs beat a book with a tab on every article. A hundred tabs is the same as none.
