Hazardous Locations Practice Questions

Class, then division, then group, asked in that order and never out of it. These 25 items work the classification rules at 500.5, the material groups at 500.6, the protection techniques at 500.7, the bonding section that is new for 2026 at 500.30, and the sealing rules at 501.15 where most of the numbers live. Class III and its division split get the attention the exam gives them.

1. A dispensing bay is full of vapor coming off gasoline. Which class covers it?

B. Class I

Class I is flammable gases and the vapors that come off flammable and combustible liquids, so naming the substance settles the class before anything else is read. Class II is combustible dust and Class III is fibers and flyings. The group comes third and never decides the class.

2. Grain dust hangs in the air around an elevator leg during normal operation. Which class and division?

C. Class II, Division 1

Dust puts you in Class II, and dust in the air under normal operating conditions in quantities enough to make an ignitible mixture is the Division 1 description. Division 2 is where the dust is not normally in suspension in those quantities. The material picks the class and the frequency picks the division.

3. Ignitible fibers are stored in a warehouse, and nothing is manufactured there. What is the division?

D. Division 2, because the fibers are stored or handled other than in the process of manufacture

Class III splits on a different axis than the other two classes. Making the material or using it in the process is Division 1, and storing it or handling it outside manufacture is Division 2. Carrying the normal operation test over from Class I is the error this item is built on.

4. Metal combustible fibers and flyings may be present in hazardous quantities. How does the 2026 edition classify that location?

A. Class II, Division 1, Group E

Metal fibers behave like metal dust, so the classification section puts them where metal dust already sat rather than leaving them with the other fibers. This is a clean edition change and a natural item, since a 2023 book answers it the other way. Nonmetal fibers stay in Class III.

5. Flammable liquids in a process area are kept inside closed containers and closed systems, and they can escape only through an accidental rupture or a breakdown. What division is that?

Division 2 assumes the hazard is contained and shows up only when something fails. Division 1 assumes it is present while the equipment runs normally, or frequently because of repair, maintenance or leakage. Closed containers with an accidental rupture as the escape path is the wording the Division 2 description uses.

6. Which class carries no group designation at all under the division system?

The materials section assigns groups under two headings, one for Class I gases and vapors and one for Class II dusts, and there is no third heading. An answer choice offering a Class III group is offering something the section never created, which makes it quick to eliminate.

7. A combustible carbonaceous dust falls into Group F rather than Group G. What is the test the section uses?

A. More than 8 percent total entrapped volatiles, or sensitization by another material so that it presents an explosion hazard

Coal, carbon black, charcoal and coke dusts are all carbonaceous, and only the ones over that volatile threshold land in Group F. Group G picks up combustible dusts that are in neither E nor F, including flour, grain, wood, plastic and chemicals. This is a lookup, not something to carry in your head.

8. Which dusts does Group E cover?

B. Combustible metal dusts, including aluminum, magnesium and their commercial alloys

Group E is the metal dust group, and the code adds a note that dusts containing magnesium or aluminum call for extreme precaution. Group F is the carbonaceous group and Group G picks up flour, grain, wood, plastic and chemicals. Knowing which letters belong to which class lets you throw out an incoherent choice in one second.

9. A building holds a process room, a storage room and an office. How does the classification section tell you to treat them?

D. Each room, section or area is considered individually in determining its classification

The general subdivision says the classification is worked room by room, section by section, area by area. That is why a plant drawing shows boundaries inside a building rather than one label on the roof. It also means the unclassified space next door does not inherit anything from the classified space.

10. An ammonia refrigerant machinery room has mechanical ventilation that runs continuously or starts on detection. What does the classification section permit?

A. The room is permitted to be classified as an unclassified location

This is one of the few places where the code names a specific room and lets it out of classification, and it hangs on the ventilation and on a detection setpoint stated in parts per million. Read the conditions in your own book rather than remembering the outcome, because the outcome depends entirely on them.

11. An area has been classified. Who is the documentation required to be available to?

B. The authority having jurisdiction and those authorized to design, install, inspect, maintain or operate the equipment

The documentation section asks for an area classification drawing and associated documentation, and it names a wide audience rather than just the inspector. That is the practical reason a stem usually hands you the classification instead of asking you to derive it. Deriving one is engineering work done before the electrical scope starts.

12. Which of these is outside the scope of Article 500?

The scope covers the six division-system buckets and then says in terms that it does not cover the zone locations, explosives and pyrotechnics, places where pyrophoric materials are the only materials handled, or nonelectrical ignition sources. Zone work lives in the articles written for it. A scope item is really a question about which article to open.

13. Where does the explosionproof protection technique apply?

A. Class I, Division 1 or Division 2

Each technique in that section is written with the locations it serves attached to it, and explosionproof is a Class I answer. Dust-ignitionproof is the Class II answer, and the two are not interchangeable because they solve different physical problems. Containing an explosion is not the same job as keeping dust out.

14. The dusttight protection technique is permitted in which locations?

Dusttight reaches across two classes but stops short of Class II, Division 1, where dust-ignitionproof is the technique. Each entry in the protection techniques section names its own locations, and the suitability of the whole set is also gathered in a Chapter 9 table.

15. A facility is documented using zone numbers rather than divisions. Which article covers combustible dusts and fibers under that scheme?

C. Article 506, which uses Zone 20, Zone 21 and Zone 22

The zone scheme runs in two articles, one for gases and vapors and one for dusts and fibers, and the number ranges tell them apart. Assuming the zone system is for gases only is one of the two standing traps here. The other is reading Zone 1 as a one for one match with Division 1, which it is not.

16. Which bonding means is specifically not permitted in a Class I, Class II or Class III division location?

D. Locknut and bushing or double-locknut type connections

The bonding section that is new for the 2026 edition lists what is permitted and then lists what is not, and the ordinary locknut and bushing arrangement is on the second list. So is a bonding locknut used around a reducing washer or an oversized knockout. The three other choices are on the permitted list.

17. Which of these does the hazardous location bonding section accept?

B. Threadless couplings and connectors made up tight for metal raceways and metal-clad cables

The permitted list has three entries: wrenchtight threaded couplings, entries or listed threaded hubs, threadless couplings and connectors made up tight, and other listed devices such as bonding-type locknuts and bushings. Double locknuts are acceptable at an ordinary service and are named on the not permitted list here.

18. Flexible metal conduit is used in a classified location. What does the bonding section require with it?

D. An equipment bonding jumper of the wire type, sized from 250.122

Flexible metal conduit and liquidtight flexible metal conduit get their own subsection, and it calls for a wire type jumper sized on the overcurrent device the way any equipment grounding conductor is. The subsection also carries a case where the jumper is not required, so read the conditions before you skip it.

19. A conduit is threaded into an entry on explosionproof equipment using National Standard Pipe Taper threads. How many threads have to be fully engaged?

C. At least five, with an exception at four and one half for listed equipment with factory-threaded entries

Thread engagement is what makes the joint able to hold an explosion inside the enclosure, so the equipment section states a count rather than leaving it to the fitter. The exception is narrow and applies to listed explosionproof equipment with factory-threaded entries. Metric entries carry their own class of fit and their own count.

20. Reconditioned equipment is proposed for a Class I location. What does the article require?

A. That any changes to the explosion protection features be assessed as part of the reconditioning process

A reconditioned equipment section sits near the front of the article in the 2026 template, and it does not ban the practice. It puts a condition on it aimed at the one thing that matters here, which is whether the explosion protection survived the work. Nothing in it asks for a change of division.

21. Where do the permitted wiring methods for Class I locations appear in the 2026 edition?

The panel converted the old lists into tables for usability, so there is a table for Division 1, one for flexible connections in Division 1, and the matching pair for Division 2. Find them and put a tab on the page. Do not copy them out, because a list of methods printed anywhere else is worth nothing in the room.

22. What is a conduit seal in a Class I location there to do?

B. Minimize the passage of gases and vapors and prevent flames from traveling from one part of the installation to another

A raceway leaving a classified space is a path for two things, an ignition traveling along the pipe and the atmosphere migrating into a room nobody classified. A seal addresses both. The code even notes that seals are not designed to hold a continuous pressure difference, so the pressure answer is the opposite of the truth.

23. Two explosionproof enclosures that each require a seal are joined by a nipple 30 inches long. What does the sealing section permit?

A. A single seal in that nipple, if it sits no more than 18 inches from either enclosure

The relief applies to nipples or runs not over 36 inches between two enclosures that both need seals, and one seal covers both if it is within 18 inches of one of them. A 30 inch nipple fits. Read the two distances carefully, because an item will hand you a length just over the limit to see whether you checked.

24. A conduit run leaves a Class I, Division 1 location and enters an unclassified area. Where may the boundary seal be installed?

C. On either side of the boundary, within 10 feet of it

The boundary seal may sit on either side within the stated distance, and where it lands on the unclassified side the Division 1 wiring method has to run all the way to it. Between the seal and the point the conduit leaves the location, no union, coupling, box or other fitting is allowed except a listed explosionproof reducer at the seal.

25. A seal is poured in a trade size 1/2 fitting. What minimum thickness does the code state for the compound?

B. Not less than the trade size of the fitting, and in no case less than 5/8 inch

The thickness rule keys to the trade size and then puts a floor under it, which is why a small fitting still gets more compound than its own size. The same subsection caps the conductors in a seal at a quarter of the area of a rigid metal conduit of that trade size and keeps splices and taps out of a fitting meant only for sealing.
