Luminaires and Clothes Closets Practice Questions
The closet item comes up on every form of this examination, and it is two lookups rather than one: the storage space volume first, then the clearance that pairs with the luminaire you have. These 25 questions work all four parts of 410.16, the bathtub and shower zone, luminaire support and grounding, recessed luminaire clearances and thermal insulation, and the conditions under which a luminaire may be used as a raceway.
Pick an answer and the explanation opens with the section it comes from. These are original questions written for this site, not questions from the exam. Have your own code book open: the Texas exam is open book, and looking the section up is the skill being tested.

1. A closet luminaire item is on the paper. How many lookups does answering it take?

B. Two, the storage space volume and the clearance that pairs with that luminaire
The storage space is a dimensioned volume and the clearance is measured from the nearest point of it, so neither half answers the item alone. Turning to one of them and working the other from memory is the standard way this one is lost. Wattage is not in the rule at all.

2. In the lower part of a clothes closet storage space, how far out from the side and back walls does the volume reach?

The volume steps. Below, in the hanging zone, it reaches 24 inches out from the sides and back. Above, in the shelf zone, it reaches a shorter distance. Sketching it in the margin settles in fifteen seconds what a paragraph argues about for a minute.

3. Above the hanging zone, how far out from the walls does the storage space reach?

C. 12 inches, or the width of the shelf, whichever is greater
The shelf zone is the shallower one and it carries a whichever is greater test, so a deep shelf pushes the volume out past the stated figure. Reading only the number and ignoring the shelf comparison is what produces a clearance that looks correct and is not.

4. To what height does the lower part of the storage space extend?

A. 6 feet, or the height of the highest clothes-hanging rod
The lower zone runs from the closet floor up to 6 feet or up to the highest rod, and the shelf zone carries on from there to the ceiling. A closet with a high rod pushes the deep part of the volume higher, which is exactly the case an item writer picks.

5. A closet lets you reach a hanging rod from both sides. What does that add to the storage space?

This sentence handles a walk-through closet where clothes hang clear of the walls, and it adds a slab of space centered on the rod rather than measured from a wall. Walk-in and reach-in are trade words the code does not use, so work from the rod and the walls the sentence names.

6. Which luminaire types are kept out of a clothes closet entirely?

C. Luminaires with open or partially enclosed lamps, and pendant luminaires or lampholders
These get no clearance because they do not get in at all. An open lamp is not handled with a bigger distance, it is handled by keeping it out, and the same goes for anything hanging on a cord or a chain. Check this subsection before you measure anything, because it can end the item on the spot.

7. A 25 watt lamp sits in an open lampholder in a clothes closet. Is the low wattage relevant?

A. No, an open lampholder is not permitted in a clothes closet at any wattage
Wattage does not appear anywhere in the rule, and neither does whether the closet has a door or whether you can walk into it. The volume is built from the walls, the floor, the rod and the shelf. An answer that leans on any of those other facts is leaning on something the book does not say.

8. A surface-mounted LED luminaire with a completely enclosed light source is installed on a closet ceiling. What clearance does the code state from the nearest point of the storage space?

Exactly one of the four permitted pairings gets the larger clearance, and this is it. Remember which single case is the expensive one and you can reconstruct the rest at the page, because the other three share the shorter figure.

9. A recessed fluorescent luminaire is installed in a closet ceiling. What clearance applies?

Recessed fluorescent is one of the three pairings that take the shorter clearance, along with recessed incandescent or LED with a completely enclosed source and surface-mounted fluorescent. Recessing does not by itself put a luminaire inside the storage space.

10. Which single combination takes the larger of the two closet clearances?

Two properties of the luminaire decide the number, how it is mounted and what the light source is, and neither of them is the wattage. Surface-mounted and incandescent or LED together is the one expensive case. The other three share the shorter distance.

An exception permits surface-mounted fluorescent and LED luminaires identified for this use to sit inside the storage space, and the permitted types list names them separately as well. Somebody drilled on a pair of distances walks past that option for looking too good to be true. It is in the book.

12. A recessed LED luminaire with a completely enclosed light source is installed in a closet wall. What clearance applies from the nearest point of the storage space?

Recessing puts this one in the shorter group along with recessed and surface-mounted fluorescent. The completely enclosed source is what makes the luminaire permitted at all, and the mounting is what sets the number. Two facts out of the stem, one line in the section.

13. A ceiling-suspended paddle fan with a light kit is proposed near a bathtub. What zone does the code define around the tub?

A. 3 feet horizontally and 8 feet vertically, measured from the bathtub rim or shower stall threshold
The zone is all-encompassing and includes the space directly over the tub or shower. What it restricts is a named set of equipment, the cord-connected, chain, cable or cord-suspended kinds, lighting track, pendants and paddle fans with light kits, rather than every luminaire in the zone.

14. A recessed luminaire sits directly over a bathtub, within the outside dimensions of the tub and below 8 feet. What marking does it carry?

B. Suitable for damp locations, or suitable for wet locations where it is subject to shower spray
A separate sentence in the same subsection handles the luminaire over the tub itself, and it is answered by a marking rather than by the zone. Where the luminaire is subject to shower spray the wet marking is required. This is why a recessed can over a tub is a different question from a pendant beside it.

15. Which of these is not permitted to be installed reconditioned?

The article carries a short list of what may not be installed reconditioned, and it covers luminaires, lampholders, ballasts, LED drivers, lamps and retrofit kits. It also says a luminaire fitted with a retrofit kit is not considered a reconditioned luminaire, which is the distinction the trade cares about.

16. When may a luminaire be supported by the screw shell of a lampholder?

C. When it weighs 6 pounds or less and no dimension exceeds 16 inches
Two limits sit in one sentence and either one of them alone disqualifies the support. A small fixture that happens to be 20 inches across is out on the dimension even though the weight is fine. Above those limits the luminaire is supported by the box or by an independent means.

17. A luminaire is installed in a suspended ceiling grid. What does the code require?

B. That it be securely fastened to the ceiling framing member by bolts, screws or rivets, or by listed clips identified for that framing member and luminaire
The framing members themselves have to be fastened to each other and attached to the building structure at appropriate intervals, and then the luminaire is fastened to the framing member by a named means. Listed clips are permitted, but the listing has to match both the grid and the luminaire.

18. A recessed luminaire is not identified for contact with insulation. How far do its recessed parts stay from combustible materials?

The clearance applies to the recessed parts, and the section names two things that are allowed to be in contact anyway, the points of support and the trim finishing off the ceiling opening. A luminaire identified for contact with insulation may touch combustible material at all of those places.

19. How close may thermal insulation come to a recessed luminaire that is not marked Type IC?

D. No closer than 3 inches to the enclosure, wiring compartment, ballast, driver or power supply, and none above it
Two separate clearances live in the same section and they are easy to swap. One governs combustible material and one governs thermal insulation, and the insulation figure is the larger of the two. A Type IC marking removes this restriction, which is the whole point of the marking.

20. A recessed incandescent luminaire is installed in a ceiling. What does the code require of it?

A. Thermal protection, identified as thermally protected
Two narrow exceptions release the requirement, one for a luminaire identified for use in poured concrete and one for a luminaire whose construction and thermal performance are equivalent and which is identified as inherently protected. Neither of them is about the ceiling type or the circuit.

21. When may a luminaire be used as a raceway for circuit conductors?

D. Where it is listed and marked for use as a raceway, identified for through-wiring, or designed to connect end to end in a continuous assembly
It is a permission with three conditions rather than a general allowance. The end to end case is the one that turns up on jobs, and it permits the conductors of a 2-wire branch circuit or one multiwire branch circuit, plus one additional 2-wire circuit supplying some of the connected luminaires.

22. A combustible ceiling finish is exposed between the edge of a luminaire canopy and the outlet box. When does the code ask for it to be covered with noncombustible material?

B. Where the exposed surface area is 180 square inches or more
The rule is dimensional, which is what makes it easy to write an item around. A canopy smaller than the hole in the ceiling leaves finish exposed to lamp heat, and past a stated area the code wants noncombustible material there. The lamp type does not enter it.

23. Which exposed conductive surface on a luminaire is not required to be connected to an equipment grounding conductor?

A. A surface on a portable luminaire that has a polarized attachment plug
Three narrow exceptions release the requirement, and this is one of them. The others cover surfaces separated from live parts by a listed system of double insulation and small isolated parts such as mounting screws and clips spaced at least 1 1/2 inches from lamp terminals. Everything else gets the connection.

24. Branch-circuit conductors are proposed to pass through an outlet box that is an integral part of a luminaire. When is that permitted?

C. Where the luminaire is identified for through-wiring, or the conductors are a 2-wire or multiwire circuit supplying luminaires connected together
The restriction exists because conductors passing through a luminaire body sit in the heat of the lamp, and the same section limits the temperature the conductors in an outlet box may see. Identification for through-wiring is what says the manufacturer accounted for it.

25. A cleat-type lampholder has exposed terminals. Under what condition does the code permit that?

The general rule is that luminaires, lampholders and lamps have no live parts normally exposed to contact, and the exception turns on height alone. A separate section handles lampholders over highly combustible material, where the unswitched type is required and a similar height figure appears.
