Pools and Spas Practice Questions

Article 680 is organized by the kind of water rather than by the kind of gear, with general sections at the front that reach all of it, so the first move on any item is deciding which part you are standing in. These 25 items work that split, then the two kinds of rule inside it: the location rules that turn on a distance from the inside wall, and the equipment rules that follow the motor or the heater wherever it sits. The equipotential bonding section gets the largest share, because it is the spine of the article.

1. What does Article 680 cover?

C. Wiring for and equipment in or adjacent to swimming, wading, therapeutic and decorative pools, fountains, hot tubs, spas and hydromassage bathtubs, whether permanently installed or storable, and metallic auxiliary equipment such as pumps and filters

The scope is wider than the phrase swimming pool suggests, and it reaches the auxiliary metal equipment as well as the water. It also defines the phrase body of water for the whole of Part I, so a general section at the front reaches every kind of water in the article unless a later part amends it. A candidate hunting Chapter 5 for this material is in the wrong chapter, since special equipment is Chapter 6.

2. Article 680 carries a listing requirement and, separately, a provision about inspection. What do the two say?

A. All electrical equipment the article covers is required to be listed, and the authority having jurisdiction is permitted to require periodic inspection and testing

The 2026 edition ran a common template through the book that puts listing requirements at the second section of an article, and this article got one. It is a single short sentence and it reaches everything the article covers, so an option that narrows it to one kind of equipment is wrong on its face. The inspection provision is a permission handed to the authority having jurisdiction rather than a schedule imposed on the installer.

3. Ground-fault protection is required for receptacles and outlets on a branch circuit rated 150 volts or less to ground at a pool. Which circuits does the article name for Class A protection?

D. Single-phase branch circuits rated 60 amperes or less, and 3-phase branch circuits rated 100 amperes or less

The general ground-fault section at the front of the article carries two brackets, one for 150 volts or less to ground and one for above it, and each bracket names the circuit ratings it reaches. Above 150 volts to ground and not over 480 volts phase to phase, the answer is a special purpose device with a trip current not over 20 mA rather than a Class A device. An informational note points out that the high leg of a 4-wire delta and the two ungrounded phases of a corner-grounded delta are above 150 volts to ground.

4. A 15-ampere branch circuit runs to pool equipment in a wet location. What equipment grounding conductor does the article call for?

B. Insulated copper, 12 AWG

Table 250.122 sizes a 15-ampere circuit at 14 AWG copper, but the pool article adds two conditions on top of the table: the conductor is insulated copper, and it is never smaller than 12 AWG. So the table answer is the wrong answer here and the floor governs. This is the pattern to watch on any special occupancy item, where the article amends a general rule rather than replacing it.

5. An electric pool water heater uses resistance heating elements. How does the article limit the elements and their protection?

A. Elements are subdivided into loads not exceeding 48 amperes and protected at not over 60 amperes

Two numbers in one sentence, one for the load and one for the device, and an item will swap them or nudge them one standard size. The subdivision rule is what keeps a large resistance heater from sitting on one very large circuit. Heat pumps and chillers are handled in the next subsection and are sized to the nameplate instead.

6. A pool water heater with resistance elements carries a total nameplate-rated load of 40 amperes. What is the minimum ampacity for the branch-circuit conductors and the minimum rating for the overcurrent device?

C. 50 amperes

The article puts this load at 125 percent, so 40 times 1.25 gives 50 amperes for both the conductors and the device. Answering 40 amperes takes the nameplate straight across and misses the multiplier, and 45 is what you get by treating this like the next standard size above some other figure. Nothing here is rounded, since 50 is already a standard rating.

7. May underground wiring be run under a permanently installed pool?

D. Only where the wiring is necessary to supply pool equipment permitted by the article

The underground subsection has two halves and they point in opposite directions. The first permits underground wiring within 5 feet horizontally of the inside wall and lists the methods considered suitable there, and the second closes off the space under the pool itself except for wiring the pool needs. An item that describes a feeder crossing under a pool on its way somewhere else is answered from the second half.

8. Where does the maintenance disconnecting means for pool utilization equipment other than lighting have to sit?

B. Readily accessible, within sight from the equipment, and not less than 5 feet horizontally from the inside walls unless a permanent barrier gives a 5 foot reach path

Three conditions ride together in one sentence and an item will satisfy two of them and break the third. The measurement is stated carefully as well: it runs from the water's edge along the shortest path required to reach the disconnect, so a fence or a wall that lengthens the walk counts in your favor. The means has to open all ungrounded conductors at once.

9. Which wiring method does the corrosive environment section rule out at a pool?

A. Aluminum wiring methods

The subsection lists six methods it considers suitable and then bars aluminum outright, which is a rare flat prohibition in a section otherwise written around suitability. The reason is in an informational note about chlorine attacking connections, equipment and enclosures. Other equipment is either identified for corrosive environments, installed in corrosion-resistant enclosures, or listed for pool and spa use.

10. A pool-associated motor is cord and plug connected. What is the limit on the flexible cord?

C. Not more than 3 feet in length

Nine hundred millimeters prints as 3 feet, and this figure belongs to pool motors specifically. The 15 foot cord in the same article belongs to packaged spa and hot tub equipment assemblies, which is the number a distractor will borrow. The other permitted wiring option is a flexible connection at or adjacent to the motor using liquidtight flexible conduit or suitable Type MC cable.

11. An existing pool pump motor is replaced with a new one. What does the 2026 edition say about the outlet serving it?

B. The outlet has to comply with the ground-fault protection requirement for pool motors

This subsection is new for this cycle, so nobody sitting on a 2023 memory has read it, and it puts replacement, reconditioning and repair on the same footing as new work. The rule reaches the outlet rather than the motor, which is the point candidates miss. Read the subsection it points back at, since that is where the ground-fault requirement actually lives.

12. A variable-speed pool motor is fed through an adjustable-speed drive. Where may the ground-fault protection not be placed?

A. Between the output terminals of the drive and the motor

A drive output is not a sine wave and a ground-fault device sitting there does not behave the way the device was tested to behave. So the protection goes on the supply side of the drive instead, which is where the other three choices all put it. An item on this reads like a location question and is really an equipment question.

13. A permanently installed pool is built. Where does the required 125-volt, 15- or 20-ampere receptacle go?

D. Not less than 6 feet from and not more than 20 feet from the inside wall, and not more than 6 feet 6 inches above the floor, platform or grade level serving the pool

The rule is a window rather than a single distance, with a floor and a ceiling on the horizontal measurement plus a height limit. It also has to sit on a general-purpose branch circuit. Reading only the near limit or only the far limit is the most common way to lose this item.

14. How far from the inside walls of a permanently installed pool does the ground-fault protection requirement for receptacles reach?

C. 20 feet

Six meters prints as 20 feet, and every receptacle inside that circle gets ground-fault protection under the general section at the front of the article, whether the ordinary kind or the special purpose kind. The three wrong figures are all real distances in the same section applied to other things, which is why answering from a remembered number rather than a read paragraph is risky here. Measurements for receptacle spacing follow the shortest path a supply cord would take without piercing a barrier.

15. In an outdoor pool area, a luminaire is installed above the water. How high do all of its parts have to be above the maximum water level?

B. Not less than 12 feet

The outdoor clearance is 3.7 m, printed as 12 feet, and it applies over the pool and out to 5 feet horizontally from the inside walls. It reaches lighting outlets, festoon lighting and ceiling-suspended paddle fans as well as the luminaire itself. Indoors the same clearance applies unless the branch circuit is ground-fault protected, which buys a lower mounting height for two named kinds of equipment.

16. A luminaire sits 8 feet horizontally from the inside wall of a pool and 6 feet above the maximum water level. What does the article require?

D. Ground-fault protection, since it is in the 5 foot to 10 foot band and it is not at least 5 feet above the maximum water level with a rigid attachment

Work the two facts in the stem against the two conditions in the subsection. It is inside the 5 foot to 10 foot band, so protection is owed unless the escape clause is met, and the escape clause takes both a 5 foot height above the maximum water level and a rigid attachment to the structure adjacent to or enclosing the pool. Six feet clears the height, so the answer turns on the attachment, and nothing in the stem gives you one.

17. Where do switching devices go relative to a permanently installed pool?

A. At least 5 feet horizontally from the inside walls, unless separated by a solid fence, wall or other permanent barrier giving at least a 5 foot reach distance, or unless the switch is listed as acceptable for use within 5 feet

One distance and two ways out of it, and the second way out is the one people have not read, since a switch can be listed for use inside the 5 foot zone. Ground-fault protection is not one of the ways out, which is what the last distractor is built on. Portable electric signs get a flat prohibition at the same distance in the subsection right below.

18. How far does the perimeter surface that gets bonded extend from a permanently installed pool?

C. 3 feet horizontally beyond the inside walls

Nine hundred millimeters prints as 3 feet, and the perimeter surface takes in unpaved surfaces, concrete, masonry pavers and other paving alike. The same sentence adds a vertical window, since the surface counts between 3 feet above and 3 feet below the maximum water level. A permanent wall or building 5 feet high or more limits the bonding to the pool side of it.

19. What does the article say the equipotential bonding conductors do not have to reach?

B. Remote panelboard enclosures, service equipment or electrodes

The grid is doing a different job from the grounding electrode system, so it gets a sentence saying it need not run back to a panelboard, service equipment or an electrode. The other three choices are all on the list of parts that are bonded. The conductor itself is solid copper or 40 percent copper-clad steel, insulated, covered or bare, and not smaller than 8 AWG.

20. A listed cord and plug connected double-insulated pool pump is installed and nothing else ties the bonding grid to the premises equipment grounding system. What does the article call for?

D. A solid 8 AWG copper conductor run from the pool bonding means to an accessible point near the motor, long enough to bond a replacement, and connected to the equipment grounding conductor of the motor circuit

A double-insulated pump breaks the connection that normally joins the bonded network to the equipment grounding system at the pump, and the article closes that gap rather than leaving the grid floating. The stub conductor exists so the next motor, which may not be double insulated, has something to land on. Notice that the fix is a connection to the motor circuit equipment grounding conductor, not a run out to an electrode.

21. None of the bonded parts at a pool touches the water. What does the article require?

A. An approved corrosion-resistant conductive surface in direct contact with the water, exposing not less than 9 square inches to the water at all times, bonded into the grid

The water is treated as one of the bonded parts, which follows straight from the idea behind the grid: if everything a swimmer can touch sits at one potential and the water does not, the difference you were removing is back. Fifty-eight hundred square millimeters prints as 9 square inches. The surface also has to sit where usual pool activity will not damage or dislodge it.

22. A metal window frame sits 4 feet horizontally from the inside wall of a pool. Is it bonded?

B. Yes, since fixed metal parts within 5 feet horizontally of the inside walls are bonded unless a permanent barrier prevents contact

The fixed metal parts subsection names metal-sheathed cables and raceways, metal piping, metal awnings, metal fences and metal door and window frames, so the list is broader than anything anyone would call electrical. It reaches either 5 feet horizontally from the inside walls or 12 feet vertically above the maximum water level, and either one is enough. The exception is a permanent barrier that prevents a person from making contact.

23. How does the 2026 edition separate a storable pool from a permanently installed pool?

C. A storable pool is installed entirely on or above the ground and is intended to be stored when not in use or is designed for ease of relocation, while a permanently installed pool is constructed in the ground, partly in the ground, above ground, inside a building or on a building

The water depth people carry around is gone from these definitions, and both of them live in Article 100 rather than in Article 680, which is why a candidate hunting the pool article comes up empty. The permanently installed definition also says whether or not served by electrical circuits, so the presence of wiring is not the test either. Deciding which of the two you are holding decides which part of the article governs the whole item.

24. A cord-connected filter pump serves a storable pool. What does the article call for?

D. An approved system of double insulation or its equivalent, and a ground-fault circuit interrupter integral to the attachment plug or in the cord within 12 inches of the plug

The storable pool part puts the protection on the appliance itself rather than relying on the branch circuit, and it fixes where the device sits so it cannot be defeated by a long cord. The same part separately requires ground-fault protection for every receptacle within 20 feet of the inside walls of a storable pool, spa or hot tub. Answering a storable pool item out of the permanently installed part is the standard way to lose one of these.

25. A luminaire is installed over an indoor spa, 4 feet from the inside wall, on a branch circuit with ground-fault protection. What is the minimum mounting height above the maximum water level?

A. 7 feet 6 inches

The spa part gives two heights for the same location and the ground-fault protection is what moves you between them: 12 feet with no protection, and 2.3 m, printed as 7 feet 6 inches, with it. A third paragraph lets certain recessed and surface-mounted luminaires suitable for damp locations go lower still when protected. Answering a spa item out of the permanently installed pool part is the mistake this question is built to catch, since the pool clearances read almost the same and are not.
