Wiring Methods Practice Questions

Chapter 3 is a set of articles built to one template, so the number after the decimal point carries meaning before you know which article you are in. These 25 items work that template, the split between Article 300 and the method article, and the sections inside Article 300 that moved down two places for the 2026 edition. Several ask for a distance, and the fastest way to those is knowing whether the question is about the run or about the termination.

Pick an answer and the explanation opens with the section it comes from. These are original questions written for this site, not questions from the exam. Have your own code book open: the Texas exam is open book, and looking the section up is the skill being tested.

1. What does Article 300 cover?

A. General requirements for wiring methods and materials for wiring installations not over 1000 volts ac, 1500 volts dc, unless modified by other articles in Chapter 3

It is the layer sitting above every method article, and a method article modifies it for its own method rather than replacing it. Neither one is complete on its own, which is why a Chapter 3 item always has two possible homes. Conductor ampacity and insulation live in Article 310 and are a different lookup entirely.

2. Which of these does Article 300 say it does not cover?

B. Conductors that form an integral part of equipment such as motors, controllers or motor control centers

The not covered list has two parts: a set of limited energy and communications systems, and equipment internal wiring. Everything in the other three options is a section inside the article, so a candidate who has never read the scope will pick one of them. Reading the scope first is what settles whether you are in the right article at all.

3. In a Chapter 3 method article, which section numbers carry uses permitted and uses not permitted?

C. The article number followed by point 10 and point 12

Committees use the same numbers for the same purposes across articles covering similar subjects, so the lookup you do fast in one article works the same way in one you have never opened. Those two sections carry most of the knowledge items and they are read as a pair, because candidates read the permitted list and skip the prohibition list, and the prohibition list is where the items are.

4. Where do the construction specifications of a method article begin?

D. At the three digit numbers, point 100 and above

Those sections describe how the product is manufactured: materials, wall thickness, marking. An exam item almost never lives there, which means the last third of most method articles is not worth your reading time. The low numbers decide whether the method belongs there at all and the middle numbers decide how it goes in.

5. A stem describes a cable passing through a bored hole in a floor joist and names the cable type in passing. Which article is it testing?

A. Article 300, because the scenario is about the building

Sort on what the scenario spends its words describing. Studs, joists, trenches, roof decks and ceiling cavities are Article 300 subjects, and trade size, bends, conductor count and fittings are method article subjects. A cable type mentioned in passing is not the question; it is what tells you the wiring method exists at all.

6. In a raceway article, which section number gives the smallest and largest trade size the article covers?

B. Point 20, with point 22 giving how many conductors are allowed inside

Size and conductor count sit next to each other because they answer the same practical question from two directions. Point 30 is securing and supporting, point 42 is couplings and connectors, and point 60 is grounding for that method. The manual says committees use these numbers to the extent possible rather than always, so an article with no bends section simply describes a method that does not bend.

7. Alternating current and direct current circuits at 1000 volts ac, 1500 volts dc or less share one raceway. What does Article 300 require of the conductors?

C. Every conductor has an insulation rating at least equal to the maximum circuit voltage applied to any conductor in the raceway

Sharing is permitted and the price is the insulation rating, which is set by the highest voltage present rather than by each conductor's own circuit. Anything above that band, meaning over 1000 volts alternating current or over 1500 volts direct current, does not share with the lower one except where Article 305 permits it, which is the separate rule directly underneath. Fill and derating are separate calculations that neither permission touches.

8. A cable is run parallel to a stud in a concealed location. What does the code require?

D. The nearest outside surface of the cable is not less than 1-1/4 inches from the nearest edge of the member

The rule reaches both exposed and concealed locations and it applies to furring strips as well as to joists, rafters and studs. Where the distance cannot be held, the same steel plate or sleeve protection applies. Notice the measurement runs from the outside surface of the cable rather than from its centerline, which is a quarter inch or so of difference on a common cable.

9. Where does Article 300 put the equivalents between metric designators and trade sizes for conduit and tubing?

A. In Table 300.19(B), alongside the raceway fill rule that points at Chapter 9 Table 1

The two halves of that section answer the two questions you have about a raceway before you buy any: how much goes in it, and what the number on the label means. The designators are identification only and do not relate to actual dimensions, which is why a trade size 2 conduit measures neither 2 inches inside nor 2 inches outside.

10. How much free conductor has to be left at an outlet, and how far does it extend where the opening is smaller than 8 inches?

B. 6 inches of free conductor, extending at least 3 inches outside the opening

The 6 inches is measured from the point in the box where the conductor emerges from its raceway or cable sheath, and it may be spliced or unspliced. The 3 inches is a second test that only applies where the opening is small, so both have to be satisfied on an ordinary device box. Conductors that are neither spliced nor terminated at that point are excepted from the whole section.

11. How many degrees of bends are permitted in one run between pull points?

Each method article states it for its own method under the bends section, and for the 2026 edition Article 300 carries a general rule saying the same thing for any combination of conduit or tubing methods used for a single run. That general rule is the one to reach for when a run changes from tubing to conduit partway along, since counting only the bends in one of them misses the point.

12. The support table in the rigid metal conduit article is entered by trade size. What figure does it give at trade size 2?

D. 16 feet

The support table is indexed by trade size and the interval grows with the pipe: 10 feet at half inch and three quarter, 12 at one inch, 14 through one and a half, 16 at two and two and a half, and 20 at three and larger. Answering 10 feet treats the smallest row as a general figure, which is exactly the mistake a table indexed by size is written to catch.

13. Every method article gives two distances. What actually separates them?

A. One runs fastener to fastener along the run, the other runs from a fastener to the enclosure the method lands in

Sorting them by size fails, because several raceway articles set the interval from a table indexed by trade size while the distance from a termination sits at one figure for every size the article covers. At the small end of those tables the two can land close together, and small trade size is exactly what a dwelling scenario describes. Sort on the surfaces instead and the test works everywhere.

14. When does a raceway have to be installed complete between outlet, junction or splicing points?

B. Before the conductors or cables are installed, with a short list of named exceptions

The exceptions are worth reading because they are the cases people actually meet: busways, listed manufactured assemblies, exposed raceways with hinged or removable covers, raceways installed without terminating connections where that is needed to get utilization equipment in, prewired raceway assemblies where the code permits them, and short sections used only to protect conductors from physical damage.

15. What does Article 300 say a raceway or cable tray containing electrical conductors may not also contain?

C. Any pipe, tube or other means for steam, water, air, gas, drainage or any service other than electrical

Short section, easy item, and it comes up because somebody wants to run a control air line in a spare raceway. Conductors of different systems are handled a few sections earlier and are generally permitted together where every conductor is insulated for the highest voltage present, so the first option is a rule that exists and says something else.

16. Which conductors have to be contained within the same raceway, cable, trench or cord?

D. All conductors of the same circuit, the grounded conductor where used, and all equipment grounding and bonding conductors

The list of acceptable enclosures is longer than people expect and includes a conduit body, an auxiliary gutter, a cable tray, a cablebus assembly and a trench. Parallel installations get their own subdivision applying the rule separately to each portion of the set. There is also a narrow permission for equipment grounding conductors outside a raceway in certain existing installations and in some direct current circuits.

17. At what conductor size does the requirement for a smoothly rounded entry into a cabinet, box or enclosure begin?

A. 4 AWG and larger insulated circuit conductors

Below that size the general rule does not apply, which is why a device box full of 12 AWG needs nothing beyond an ordinary connector. The section then lists four acceptable ways to get the smooth entry, including threaded hubs that are an integral part of the enclosure, and it requires the insulating material to carry a temperature rating not below that of the conductor insulation.

18. How does Article 300 treat welding as a way of attaching a metal raceway?

B. Metal raceways may not be supported, terminated or connected by welding

The sentence names three things at once, so a tack weld holding a run of conduit to steel fails on the support half even if nothing is welded at a connection. It sits under the raceway installation section beside the rule that a raceway is installed complete between outlet, junction or splicing points before the conductors go in.

19. Nonmetallic-sheathed cable enters a box. Besides being secured within 12 inches of the entry, what limit does the 2026 text place on the cable?

C. No more than 18 inches of cable may run from the entry to the support nearest it

Twelve inches is measured to the point of entry into the enclosure, while 18 inches limits how much cable actually runs from there back to its nearest fastening, which are two different measurements on a cable that turns a corner. Flat cables are not stapled on edge at all, and sections of cable protected from physical damage by a raceway are not required to be secured within the raceway.

20. What is the minimum bending radius for nonmetallic-sheathed cable?

D. Five times the diameter of the cable

The radius is measured on the inner edge of the bend and it applies during installation as well as after it, so a cable kinked while pulling and then straightened has still failed. On a flat cable the minor dimension is used when bending on the flat side and the major dimension for every other bend, which is the detail an item on this subject usually turns on.

21. How far does the sheath of nonmetallic-sheathed cable have to extend past a cable clamp or cable entry inside an enclosure?

A. Not less than 1/4 inch

It is a small number and a common inspection failure, because stripping the sheath outside the box leaves the individual conductors unprotected at the point where the clamp bears down. The same quarter inch turns up in the unfinished basement rule, where the sheath has to carry through a protective conduit or tubing and into the box by the same amount.

22. What does the couplings and connectors section of the electrical metallic tubing article require?

B. Fittings made tight, of the concrete-tight type where buried in masonry or concrete, and listed for wet locations where installed in wet locations

Two conditions and both attach to where the fitting lives rather than to how it fastens. Made tight is the general obligation and it is what an inspector checks on any run. The point 42 section carries the same shape in the metal conduit articles, so learning it once covers several of them, which is what the shared template is for.

23. What is the smallest electrical metallic tubing the article permits, and what is the exception?

C. Trade size 1/2, with trade size 3/8 permitted for enclosing the leads of motors

The size section gives a minimum and a maximum, and the maximum for this article is trade size 6. The motor lead exception is narrow and points at a specific section in Article 430. The 6 foot allowance in the second option belongs to flexible metal conduit, which has its own list of small size uses, so it is a real rule attached to the wrong article.

24. Electrical metallic tubing may not be used for the support of luminaires or other equipment, with what single exception?

D. A conduit body no bigger than the largest trade size the article covers

The uses not permitted section for this article is two lines long: severe physical damage, and support of equipment with that one carve-out. Weight limits belong to the box and enclosure articles rather than here, and independent support wires belong to the suspended ceiling rules in Article 300. Short prohibition lists are cheap items and worth reading in full.

25. Which article covers service-entrance cable?

The cable block runs in order and the numbers are worth holding: 320 armored, 330 metal-clad, 332 mineral-insulated, 334 nonmetallic-sheathed, 336 power and control tray, 338 service-entrance, 340 underground feeder. Those article numbers held through the 2026 edition; it is the sections inside them that moved, which is the opposite of what most candidates worry about.
