Why this section specifically

A ground fault device and an arc fault device look for completely different things A ground fault circuit interrupter compares the current leaving on the ungrounded conductor with the current returning on the grounded conductor. If they differ by more than a few milliamps, current is leaving the circuit by some other path, possibly a person, and it opens. An arc fault circuit interrupter is not measuring balance at all. It watches the shape of the current waveform for the erratic signature of an arc and opens on that. One protects people from shock, the other protects buildings from fire. One counts what comes back. The other listens to the waveform. They are not interchangeable. Drawn against NEC 100 definitions, 210.8 and 210.12.

Article 210 has expanded its ground-fault requirements in almost every recent edition. Locations get added. Exceptions get removed. Thresholds change.

That makes it unusually good exam material, because it separates people who read the current code from people who learned it once.

It also makes it dangerous to study from old material. A confidently remembered list of GFCI locations from two cycles back will be wrong in several places.

How to read 210.8 rather than memorize it

The section is organized by occupancy type first, then by location within it. Dwelling units are one subsection. Other than dwelling units is another. Then there are subsections for specific equipment and conditions.

So the first question on any GFCI item is which subsection you are in, not which room. A garage in a dwelling and a garage in a commercial building are answered from different places.

Find the subsection, then read the list. Do not answer from a remembered list, because the remembered list is a merge of several editions.

The Texas amendment nobody outside Texas will tell you about

Texas adopted the 2026 code with an amendment: it keeps the exception at 210.8(F) for listed heating, air conditioning and refrigeration equipment, without expiration.

That exception has been on a sunset elsewhere. Texas removed the expiry.

This matters twice. On the exam, because a Texas exam tests the Texas-adopted code. And on the job, because a nationally written training course will tell you the exception has lapsed and in Texas it has not.

Read 210.8(F) and every exception under it in your own book. This is a page nobody else writes because it only matters here.

AFCI is a different section with a different logic

Arc-fault protection lives at 210.12, and like 210.8 it turns on where the outlet is. Each of its dwelling, dormitory and other-occupancy subsections is a list of rooms and areas, so the room named in the question is what decides whether arc-fault protection is required (NEC 210.12).

That distinction is the point. A GFCI question asks where the outlet is. An AFCI question asks what the circuit supplies and where it runs.

People who study them as one topic get them confused precisely because they are adjacent in the book and answer different questions.
